A Taiwanese fishing vessel with a crew of five was detained by the Chinese mainland’s coast guard in waters off China’s southeast coast on suspicion of illegal fishing activities, the latest skirmish in the Taiwan Strait.
Liu Dejun, a spokesperson for China’s coast guard, said officers boarded the vessel and detained it on Tuesday near the coast of Fujian province for violating a fishing moratorium by trawling in a forbidden zone. The boat was using nets that were finer than those allowed by Chinese law, Liu said.
